    Past is catching up!

Thanks JohD and dingbat for your comments. 34 years ago, it was permissible to protect the entire installation with one RCD. Indeed, at that time, ELCB's were the flavour of the day...RCD had only just been introduced as a safer alternative. I will take on board all the advice given so...

    Past is catching up!

34 years ago, I was young, reckless, penniless. Had just bought my house, deep in debt, and decided to enlarge the house for the arrival of first child. Built an extension. In order to contain costs, did many things myself.....labouring for bricky, chippy, did all the plumbing and...

    Weight of water

Thanks for the advice brumylad...looks like back to the drawingboard....perhaps moving the tank to the floor below, where there are 4 by 2 joists, and since shower is being pumped, doesent matter where the cold tank is....

    Weight of water

Thanks masona. no interior wall, the space is in the apex of roof, above the ceiling of a room with dormer window. the most i could do is put in joists, above the ones already there, but connected to the roof rafters, making in effect a new floor above the existing ceiling. the joists would be...

power shower / flow rate concerns.

The flow through the shower unit when it is supplied by a 3 bar pump will be quoted by the shower unit manufacturer. That would be the maximum that can flow through your shower unit. However you dont have to shower at the maximum rate all the time. If your shower tray is filling up because you...

Thanks chris. Thats what i thought. ah well, another idea bites dust. How about spreading the load over 6 joists?

    Weight of water

Thanks to all who replied. One other conundrum, the ceiling joists are not your usual 4 by 2!. The tank is to be positioned in the apex of a chalet bungalow, where the ceiling joists are 2 by 2 inches, spaced 18 inches apart. In the section where the tank is proposed, the length of joists is 4...

Ingenious idea to stop shower pump draining expansion pipe

If what chris suggested doesent work, what about inserting a small impeller pump in the cold water feed to the cylinder?...it would be wired up to come on at the same time as the shower pump, and feed water into the cylinder, keep pressure up slightly, just enough to stop the expansion pipe...

Running water from expansion pipe when radiators on

In reply to olski..."Just to make sure, your running water was definitely coming out of the expansion pipe for the F&E tank and not the cold water storage tank ..." Dont know what F&E stands for, but the water was being pumped up the expansion pipe (the vent pipe), and entered the cold water...

Ingenious idea to stop shower pump draining expansion pipe

Thanks chris, looks like that is the first thing to attempt, if it works, even with reduced flow, that would be great. Looked at the Lennox heater, it does not have any visible holes on the outer casing, unless it is hidden underneath the outer casing. The model no is JW405NT. I have made...

Ingenious idea to stop shower pump draining expansion pipe

Thanks for all the comments. I do need all your views, even the ones i do not want to hear....only after all the possibilities are known can i make the final choice. One ray of hope is the possibility of the secondary tapping point mentioned by doitall. The heater is the directly fired type...

    Shower Head

I think you will have to get one with ever so thin holes in the head, other wise if the holes are large, what will come out of the head will be like a poor **** stream that will run down the handle of the showerhead and then down the tube.
