    Thanks Alan & Pinnacle, I'll get a new set of hinges from Screwfix and see if that does the trick. Any advice on the best way of measuring the existing hinges to get the right size (I've measured the hinge 'running plate' that fixes to window frame) and replacing the hinges without dropping...

    Thanks for the reply and the info on dot & dab - never heard of that before. The bodge appears to holding so far so I guess the job's a good 'en :? For future reference what us the best way of putting something on dot & dab; drill as deep as you can, lots of no more nails and hope? Cheers
