Cable looping in sockets - is it necessary?

Thanks for this explanation. I've managed to salvage 2 of the rooms and loop the cables as they were wired but unfortunately the plasterer has plastered over the my work with only the single cable and NO loop. The only saving grace is that it's in the dining room and I don't expect there'll be...

Cable looping in sockets - is it necessary?

I'm renovating old property which was rewired 15 years ago and have noticed cable looping back on itself between sockets in the same rooms. For example, in the lounge 2 live 3 core cables enter the room and 1 of them is wired into a double surface mounted socket (socket 1). The other cable goes...

Looking for solution to quieten noisy pump / relay in apartment block pump room

We're in a 6 storey apartment block on the first floor. The pump house / room is directly below us and the noise is very irritating. It starts with the pump running for around 10 seconds followed by what sounds like a heavy relay clicking off. This continues periodically during the day and...

Very slow leak in gas heating system - looking for seal recommendations / advice

I've a 5 year old gas heating system which I have to pressurise every few months and which I'm assuming has a very small leak somewhere. I've searched but can't find it. Someone told me I could add some sort of sealant which may cure it. Can I ask for advice please.

Request for help in removing ceiling roses & consealling connectors when fitting room spots

I should actually call them 'downlights' and not 'spotlights' to be correct. It's an apartment which we own. However most of the replies to my question do not focus on how to conceal the connector / terminal blocks or even suggest an alternative on how a professional would have done this. It...

Request for help in removing ceiling roses & consealling connectors when fitting room spots

It's actually in an apartment block and there is around 3" gap above the ceiling so it was relatively easy to fish the cable from unit to unit. I was hoping for an alternative method rather than removing the wood the roses are screwed to as this will involve cutting out a section of the ceiling...

Request for help in removing ceiling roses & consealling connectors when fitting room spots

Apologies, I understand now. The spots I'm fitting have a wide spread and use cool light. They also light the room evenly and brighter.

Request for help in removing ceiling roses & consealling connectors when fitting room spots

Actually it's more like these - I was going to use terminal blocks and break them off individually and then try to push them up into the plaster but it's really tight. I was then going to use a blank to cover them.

Request for help in removing ceiling roses & consealling connectors when fitting room spots

I'm fitting spots in all the rooms and after installing them, have tested them by wiring into the ceiling rose switch and neutral side. The problem now is that I want to remove the ceiling rose. I've done so in the first room by disconnecting the rose and putting them into 4 seperate terminal...

Request for help identifying double glazed window handle replacement.

Can I ask for help in identifying this type of double glazed window handle please. I need to find a replacement but nobody seems to know the type. It was riveted onto the window frame of a 20 years old apartment block.

Looking for advice on LED lighting along driveway.

The problem with kits is that I can't get one big enough. The driveway is around 40 metre long on either side and I thought that 1 small LED every metre was reasonable. I was thinking of embedding them into the brick at the edge of the drive.

Looking for advice on LED lighting along driveway.

I'm hoping to light a driveway inexpensively using little LED lighting 25 mm lamps. I'm thinking that it should be low voltage for safety and cost but how do I calculate the size or rating of the transformer? Is there a simple calculation I can use? Also what type of cable should I use? I'm...

Wanting to change MR11 and transformers to standard UK mains voltage 240V & use dimmable LED bulbs.

I appreciate this but am just wondering how to easily increase the hole size as a cut out won't have anything to centre itself on. The only way would be to do it manually or is there another way?

Wanting to change MR11 and transformers to standard UK mains voltage 240V & use dimmable LED bulbs.

I have a couple of dozen 20 Watt MR11 bulbs on a dimmable switch in a room which I'd dearly love to change to 240 AC mains voltage as the transformers often go and it's a pain changing them. Is there any type of bulb which would fit the existing bulb holder (MR11 size) and which would mean I...

Looking for substitute for kitchen worktop mitre but not a metal joining bar!

There's actually going to be 2 right angle joints if that makes sense. When I say mitre joints I mean the lovely almost invisible joints with a clamp underneath. The biscuit join is a solution and the additional cost of only around £25 for a worktop with square edges is easy to justify. Means...
