    Pointing material

Sorry Stuart, that I don't know. The building is approx 100 years old, and I don't know if pointing has previously been renewed, or if it's the original. How would I know what it is?

    Pointing material

We've received a quote to get some pointing work completed, and the builder has quoted " Point stonework with cement ". I seem to get some conflicting information on whether pointing with cement is right or not. The building is on the seafront, exposed to the wind, rain and spray from the...

    Covering a flat roof

OK, I own a first floor flat with is on the seafront. It gets battered by strong wind and heavy rain. The bay window has a flat roof above it, and it is presently leaking. The intention is to replace the entire roof when the weather gets better...I live in Scotland, what am I hoping for? :)...

    Walls after water ingress

I live in an old property, with lathe and plaster walls. All external walls are covered in lathe and plaster, whilst the internal ones are all brick. One room has two internal, solid brick walls, and two external, lathe and plaster covered walls. At sometime in the past, there has been...

    American power cord to UK

It's a power cord for an Apple MacBook, with a three pin plug--one round pin and two flat pins--at one end and a two "hole" connector at the other.

    American power cord to UK

I bought a laptop in the US and obviously, it comes with a power cord with an American plug on it. I don't want the whole adaptor thing so, is it possible to cut off the American plug, trime the wires and then attach a UK plug? If so, what fuse should be in the plug?

    Front door lig

Folks, I'm looking for some help. I'm in a flat with an internal front door. I purchased a light, FL2314/1 from FrankLite. I was putting it up and, like the idiot I am, I dropped two of the screws from the connector block inside the lamp unit. I've lost them, and so I cannot connect the lamp...

    Leather furniture & radiators

OK, it's probably not a "Plumbing and Central Heating" question as such, but it does relate to CH, so it might fit here! Question relates to positioning of leather furniture from CH radiator. How far away from a radiator should it be?

    Electrical cabling & CH pipework

Are you saying that the plumber has put this new pipe in the 'cables' notch? No, the plumber has put a pipe behind the joist running from the CH pipe into the radiator, and parallel to the joist. The cables then cross over the pipe.

    Electrical cabling & CH pipework

Can you explain what you mean by 'gouges' and exactly where they are in the joist? Probably not the best of ways to describe it! :? On the top of the joists, there were holes cut out from where the previous wiring / CH piping had ran. The electrician has used these to run the cable...

    Electrical cabling & CH pipework

Many thanks to all for replies. The cabling looks as though it's been inserted fine. There's a gouge has been cut out of the joist for the cables, I think there's about 5 in all, and they all fit into the gouge OK. The problem appears to be from a pipe going to a radiator. It looks as...

    Electrical cabling & CH pipework

I don't know if this is the right place, because my problem covers both electrics and plumbing! We had a complete re-wire, everything fine. We then had to have the CH pipework replaced with copper pipes, as the old plastic was just that...OLD! I've lifted some floorboards to check on some...

    I am not alone...

£15k...is that all? We saved £25k on the purchase price, and have probably spent more than that on work. We still have the living room to do, and pay for two new steel beams and associated work, but as long as it's done by Christmas, we'll be happy. Or, is that wishful thinking?

    I am not alone...

I certainly know more about it, that's for sure. I also know more than I ever wanted to know about Victorian construction! We have been taking pictures, for a before & after feel, and although it's a pain in the ar$e...we're getting there! :) If only I'd a £ for every time someone's...

    I am not alone...

I'm so glad I popped in here. We've just bought a three bed, first floor flat in a sandstone building, built c. 1900. We knew there had been an issue with dampness in the past, but believed it to have been fixed. If only that was the case... So far: 1. We've had to replace the central...

To wax, or not to wax, That is the question.

I've moved into an old 1900's flat which had 5 painted doors. These were sent away to be professionally stripped, as there must have been about 100 yeaars of paint on them...as well as lead paint...so off to the professionals they went. The doors that came back were stunning. The original...
