Extension lights supplied from spur off ring main?

In the days before RCDs were as prolific as nowadays it was not uncommon to find the odd light or two spurred from a ring in a limited area as a "cheap fix" and the chances of no sockets equals no lights either, was not ideal but not overly worried about either. It was seen as an acceptable...

    Adequate combination for oven/hob/fan?

So the Electrician will be installing the cables before the cabinets cover the routes up? or has agreed to let you do that part under an adequate degree of supervision? When I was a registered competent person I would not agree to an ordinary person installing those cables but if it was say a...

    Lights Causing Sockets Breaker Tripping

Yes it does fox some people when they switch a breaker off and Line is disconnected but N is not. If the N is still connected then a N to E short (brief touching for example) can still trip an RCD . Most RCBOs are single pole (L) switching but you can get them that are double pole (L & N) switching.

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

That is perhaps the whole point of it being a point if I may point that out to you John, ;). Actually the NICEIC number of points info when you can see that they clearly mean that one twin socket is one point yet two outlets but two single adjacent sockets is two points, I think in truth that...

Why isn't 3-core cable the standard for lighting circuits?

Can I suggest that putting a connector at the ends but not sleeving the conductor(s) g/y but at least at the supply end connect to an earthing conductor/c.p.c that actually has a g/y colour? Ok, potentially you have a conductor or group of conductors at the far end that tests out as E or N and...

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

As a "Point of utilisation" as such a socket, lampholder type light fitting, etc. I know the NICEICs own forms for Periodics used to ask for this number whareas the model forms (IET/IEE) didn`t, it did cause some confusion by some inspectors listing a twin socket as two points rather than as...

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

So what do we do? Well I will tell you what I do (used to do) with a shower. Well I treat the shower heater unit as if it were a point just like a socket. I consider the shower dimensions to create a zone just like a socket would. I think it is the most reasonable thing to do. Ok it`s a lot...

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

nobody is suggesting an installer fitting a cable where it should not be. Once we establish where it is actually allowed to be then we hope it will be and accordingly others will miss damage to it

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

Although we realise that mirrors and showers etc do not fit into the zone conditions rules nicely I think that, for practical purposes we only decide to treat that object as a point of utilisation in a similar manner, almost no one will make them exceed 50mm deep or amoured/conduit and getting...

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

Put it another way , said box in wall then mirror over it. How would anyone not technically qualified be able to open it up/remove it from wall prior to drilling by a safe manner. The safe manner is everybody sticking to rules about zones (well in theory) so how can that person guess the zone...

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

Yes I too have seen cables installed with tails left hanging out then boxes mounted so that the cables were then out of zones - never underestimate the determination of complete fools. PS all done by the same person

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

It all rather depends upon the interpretation of points, accessories and switchgear and this must be done in accordance with BS7671, section 2 definitions should be the ultimate reference on that score prior to any other references we might draw upon. If said mirror does not fall into any...

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

Hmm i think you might have the kernel of a good idea in that one. However, does anyone at all bury 6.0 or 10.0 T&E shower cable more than 50mm deep or use armoured/earth sheathed cable? Id suggest not but just stick to the usual zones in practicei

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

No EFLI I disagree. Not determined by where the cable emerges from the wall but rather in line with the borders of said accessory/point/switchgear. Does the mirror qualify as any of those? Does an electric shower qualify? If not then what the heck do you do?

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

Sorry for missing your particular point till now. Away from usual tech at the moment. PS - although I do not favour horizontals in general i don’t mind them in such as kitchens etc where I feel they are more expected. But that is merely my querk as they are indeed permitted. It is the corner...

'Safe Zone' created by 'current using equipment' ??

Right I have just looked at no 26. Yes permitted IMHO. Most of us would probably run them more vertical or horizontal within the zones in practice. If it is possible for one of us to locate the actual point of actual entry then we might be inclined to assume that the installer has run so but we...
