2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

Yeah, I was to that point a few days back. I haven't spent any money on it yet...except the tow. I bought it as a project and have an offer as is, I just thought I could get a few more bucks with it running and learn a few things in the process. Which I have about anatomy but not so much about...

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

Thanks. Those aren't my numbers...found them on workshop-manuals.com specific to the 2003 1AZ-FE. Haven't done any compression tests yet. I ran the scanner again and it shows no codes. What would get me back on the path to the problem? The fuel pump is fairly complex and holds the fuel...

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

Well, I checked all 4 coil packs and saw big bright spark on each one. The fuel pump is running, I smell gas in each cylinder when I remove the plugs and in the throttle body. I guess that just leaves compression...Hmmm. It does indeed nave a chain and not a belt. So, I'm not sure how to...

Unfortunately, it's not that capable. Thanks though. Peace, Mark

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

Thanks! After a slight spray with WD-40 last night, it popped right out this morning. It was very dark and covered with varnish. I cleaned it and gently scuffed with 2000 grit sandpaper to polish it. Reinstalled and now the scanner shows now codes. Rav still won't start, however, the fuel...

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

I believe I've located the sensor, pulled the single 10mm bolt but it is stuck tight in there. Wiggles slightly, but will not come out. Any ideas on how to get it out without breaking it in case it's still good? Peace, Mark

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

I picked up an rental Actron AutoScanner Plus from Autozone and it showed the following code. Their PDF of codes shows: P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor A - Bank 1 Circuit Malfunction I'm guessing that as "hooked up" as these cars are, it's probably keeping the fuel pump from running as...

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

If it's in there, it's doing a fine job of hiding. Looked for a good half hour and didn't see anything like you described. Being an '03 it may not have one. The Rav drove away from the wreck, the rest of that day and then died after driving for about 20 mins the following morning. Time...

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

Just tested the EFI relay. It seems good. Continuity across pins 1 & 2. None across 3 & 5. Energized the coil with 12v across 1 & 2 and heard the contacts close. With coil closed, had continuity across 3 & 5. Reinstalled it. Mark

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

Thanks! Too dangerous to try the same start technique with a bit of gasoline? I'll try the spark plugs next. Mark

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

I removed the PVC hose, propped the throttle open and sprayed in some starting fluid. Replaced the hose and tried to start but no luck. What's the safest way to check for spark? Mark

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

Very interesting and helpful diagnostic chart. Entire site is full of great info. If I follow this correctly, I need a new fuel pump. http://www.aa1car.com/library/carter_fuel_pump_diagnosis.pdf Peace, Mark

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

Where would this be located? In the relay/fuse box perhaps? Thanks, Mark EDIT: Just did some reading on crash sensors and they appear to have more to do with frontal impact and airbag deployment. Unless there's another type I'm missing.

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

Thanks for the replies. I rechecked everything this morning. Not sure why I didn't check it yesterday but pins 3 and 5 that showed 11v also show continuity to ground when metered to a seat bolt going thru the floor pan. Same when metered together. So, a more accurate way of looking at it is...

2003 Toyota Rav4 Died in Busy Intersection.

I have a 2003 Rav4 (140,000 miles) that was recently rear ended. (10 to 15 mph collision). It started and drove away from the wreck with no issues. The next morning after dropping off kids, it died in the middle of a busy intersection with no warning. Cranks but hasn't started since. I've...
