    Underfloor crawl space conversion

Thanks for the comments. I'm moving towards to just leaving it as is, and improving it. The existing access hole I'm guessing was cut out when the previous boiler was installed, and they'd already 95% cut the brick through from both sides two bricks lower, I guess they just decided they'd cut...

    Underfloor crawl space conversion

Hi. My house has a underfloor cellar area, full height, concrete floor, about 2x2.5m in size. The rest of the house is just 'crawl space' but the section to the back is about 1.5m high, and I'm wondering if the access hole could safely be made bigger, then the dirt floor dug out (if possible)...

Just wondering what kind of material this is under the roof

Doesn't look like it's been retired as same tiles as all other houses on the street. Could be some idea of reflective roof sheathing. I've previously only owned older houses where you can just see wood. My worry is asbestos (late 1970 / early 1980 build), or and damp issues. It all seems dry.

Just wondering what kind of material this is under the roof

Been viewing a house- about 1970 brick/render roof tile house in Scotland. I'm just wondering what the boards here could be - and more so, if there's any issues with them.... Thanks Pretty sure they were a Wimpey development in about 1970/1980

    Under stairs floor screeding advice

I had someone knock out a wall under the stairs so I can build some large pull out draws to access the space. Previously there was just one small door, and old vinyl over the whole the floor. I just lifted the vinyl up and found the floor seems to be a mix of bricks, cement and old tiles, laid...

Very high BTU radiator recommendations for heat pump

@fixitflav yup, I have pretty good heat loss calcs and can see the BTU/Watts required at different flow temps from 30 to 65 degrees. 30 means basically filling every available wall with a radiator! Think I'm targeting 45. @muggles thanks for the tip on Kartell 90cm tall radiator - those I...

Very high BTU radiator recommendations for heat pump

Thanks @Agile - I did read that somewhere, but it's whether it's better than nothing! (well, better than an undersized horizontal one....) I'll try and avoid if possible though....

Very high BTU radiator recommendations for heat pump

Hi. adding hot aircon could actually work in this room - but i think really the solution is getting more heat output from radiators, and slowly adding more insulation to the room. This room also has a section thats double height, so another two options there are adding a fan to move warm air...

Very high BTU radiator recommendations for heat pump

Hi folks. I'm trying to spec some radiator upgrades to improve our heat pump efficiency. In summary, it was commissioned to run at a 55degC flow temp, and it basically works fine with all radiators we have at that temp, and bills seem to be similar as gas was last year. However, it would be more...

Flashing under coping stones onto metal roof

Current outhouse roof leaking in various places, so was thinking to rebuild using metal roofing. The existing felt is mortared in under the coping stones on 2 sides, and overhangs a brick wall on the other side. It has a slight angle, but not much. It's not in a hugely windy location. I'll be...

Internal wall insulation over this weird stone lintel

Not don't really need to keep it, it looks interesting, but I'd rather have a warm room!

Internal wall insulation over this weird stone lintel

Yeah I guess that would do it and allow the insulation to form a continuous barrier. If I cut it off neatly, I could always stick it back on over the insulation to retain the visual feature!

Internal wall insulation over this weird stone lintel

Hi folks, I'm planning to insulated the inside of this wall (in photo) with insulated plasterboard. The main thing I'm concerned about is how to deal with this 'feature' - the stone lintel protrudes out through the existing plaster into the room. For context, this room wall originally an...

Insulated plasterboard over Lathe and Plaster?

Did you ever get this work done? Did it work? I'm starting to think about doing the same thing on my 1850 Edinburgh house. Eg, sandstone, a few cm gap, then plaster and lathe. I did finally get Everwarm installers to come and measure up to quote, and they said they just board on top of the...

Beko oven element broke, now lower oven not working

Hi - I'm trying to fix my in-laws Beko oven - it had stopped working, so I checked the element in the lower oven, it had burnt out, so I replaced that - turn it on - and found that the digital control panel and the lower oven are still not working. There's a wee red light comes on, and the top...

    Improving insulation

Hi @jonbey - Yes, both seems to be an option, and what I'm currently thinking of doing. Thanks @Ian H for the advice about the online calculator - I've just found this: https://www.uvalue-calculator.co.uk/calculator/ which is really useful in terms of U-Values, and also suggesting...

    Improving insulation

Thanks @Ian H and @Adam182. I'd rather loose room space then warmth! The ceiling is high enough not to worry about a few inches. If I'm going to effort of removing the existing plasterboard and therefore accessing the space between the rafters anyway, I'm happy enough putting insulation between...

    Improving insulation

Hi - just found this and wondering what you ended up doing with your ceiling? I'm interested as your kitchen sounds exactly very similar ours - the old kitchen wall was knocked out about 20 years ago to join the into an older out-building, with a lean to style pitch roof that goes up about 2m...

House painted the wrong colour... maybe... advice?

Cheers folks. If it was standard 'trade' terminology, like @Bosswhite says - good to clarify at quote stage Yup that's about the full story - I've got an email chain of the chat, so that's all documented. On a previous email I wrote the following: 'was this quote for white glass all round...

House painted the wrong colour... maybe... advice?

Hi. We got a local painting company to paint the exterior of the house - window frames, gutters, gables, fascias, eves, soffits etc etc. We requested 'white gloss for all the woodwork, and grey for the gutters'. But they've painted everything grey except the window frames which they're painted...
