Do previous damp stains still give a positive damp reading?

We have a sea front Victorian property which had damp from poor guttering and chimney flashing. The chimney was removed down to the tray and rebuilt as part of a restoration grant 12 years ago and I applied stain block and repainted the huge D shaped damp stain area. But after 5 or 6 years the...

MR16 LED bulb not working as halogen replacement

I want to replace some 20W dichroic halogen MR16 down lights with LED versions but the bulbs I've bought just flash for a split second when switched on (pic attached of bulb spec). Why this is happening and what could I do to solve the situation. Thanks for any help.

White Victorian woodwork yellowing after time

I have a Victorian home and notice the woodwork, much more so on the pitched pine doors and windows/frames is nowhere near the brilliant white it was at the time of application. Research online says it's the light which eventually turns white paints yellow but some of the non pitch pine...

Dual power (12v & 240v) for caravan light

Hi, I wish to fit 12v LED lighting in a caravan but have it so it'll work off the mains hook up but also off my leisure battery. Being that the LED's are already 12v, do I just need n adapter to unplug from a 240 plug and connecting to the battery?

Boiler firing even though zones all off

I have a closed heating system with 6 motorised valves to zone the rooms/areas plus a heat leak (two 1” vertical pipes are joined by 15mm pipes). I noticed recently boiler continually firing up for a minute or so even though all zones had reached temperature and to double check I turned all...

Light stays on even though switch now removed

A light which has been working fine for years has decided to stay on a few days ago. Today the light circuit board tripped and through trying all the MBC’s it’s the same circuit which is causing it to trip. I assumed it was the switch broken/staying on so swapped it with another but the whole...

sand cement mix for bare brick prior to bonding

Hi, what's the mixture for sand and cement for a bare brick internal wall, prior to bonding and finish plaster? Also I have a load of building sand sitting in the garden from a project, will it suffice or is it strictly plastering sand you need to use – it's literally just for a 3sq m alcove...

matt white ceiling emulsion going on badly!

I'm painting a freshly plastered ceiling using Leyland matt white emulsion. I did a 80/20 paint/water mix fist to seal it. Paint feels very thick to me – load roller, do 4 or 5 swipes and by the time you come back to going over the first swipe, the edge marks are hard to roll out, have to apply...

Applying matt emulsion over soft sheen

Hi Do I need to prime or lightly key a soft sheen wall if applying matt emulsion over it? It's the Valspar V700 matt which says it's a paint and primer in one so assume it'll go on fine. 110sq m of hall and landing to redo so could well do without any prep!! Thanks

Building a decking rail with balustrades

Hi Could anyone tell me how these balustrades are fixed in place. I know spacers are set in between them but are any actually screwed in or do they rely on being packed tight within the underside of the rail and bottom rail track? Thanks

Size of joists for a floating decking area on a flat roof

I'm building a 10.3x3.3m decking area on my flat garage roof. I can't fix into the roof as it's obviously rubber/sealed so was thinking of laying 50x40mm timber down as the joists to fix the boards in to. Will these be adequate - they only need to serve as a purpose for securing the boards...

Best drill bits for drilling into steel beams

Hi I fit plantation shutters and the amount of hours I've lost through getting dead arms and breaking drill bits drilling upwards is just not funny anymore. I've tried the usual brands like Bosch, even hi-speed bits and they seem to only last for 2 or 3 holes or so. Is this usual? If so, I'll...

Cat 5 cable - finding the correct end!

Hi Is there a way of testing with a meter to find the corresponding end of a Cat 5 cable? I thought I had it right, and have connected it up right to the socket but have no connection. Seem to think there's a way of joining 2 wires then measuring resistance? Thanks
