yes its the dining room light, looks familiar, so I figure out the black and red wire that goes to the switch, the remaing red and black goes to the new light i have, 3 connections only, red in, black in and earth yellow green in, what do i do with the red and black that goes to the switch ?

yes that pic looks like the same that i have, but what confuses me is the new light i have has six wires on the ceiling but pics posted on page 3

hah? im under the impression that a electrician costs an arm and a leg right? if it is really 40ish then i could afford that, im based in Aylesbury Buckinghmshire I just have to be careful with what i can spare as i was made redundant from my job last month hence me trying to do it my self

thats seems likely, the neutral is the black wire? You know i used that led light screwdriver, that thing that tests if a wire has live current running through it, so the red wire lights up but the 2nd red does not light up but it plays a part, not sure though, im currently using a table lamp...

i cant return the wires to the original config because the existing bayonet ceiling light had IN LOOP LINE EARTH from six wires connected from the ceiling, but the new ceiling light has L EARTH N and requires 3 wire connections so thats why its puzzling, I know thats the reason why my wall...

hello people, jus to be sure, i texted someone my situation and they advised to: put black wire to L1 miss out the L2 red in the wavy line with arrow But the guy above advises to do the opposite? I just dont want to damage my last dimmer switch..

not sure, i bought the dimmer switch from B&Q for £10 a few years ago, but i never got around to doing it as im abit lame with electrics, hence why it took me that long to build up the courage to fix it finaly, but I failed, hey ho

well i will try to use the same dimmer to see if it works, i will take EFLImpudence advice and follow this: Red to L1 and Black to wavy line.

basically i guessed and joined the wires thinking it would be fine if i got it wrong, then when i switched on the light I saw a spark on the dimmer switch with a bang noise, at the same time the trip switch electric panel disarmed the electricity for the whole flat, indicating i did it wrong :(...

hey peeps ive uploaded a picture of the wall wires and the dimmer switch it self via imigur, hopefully someone can figure this out and help me as ive already done it wrong and it tripped the fusebox :)
