The input to the bridge rectifier, with the LED connected, is 15.8 v AC.

I don't quite understand that comment. I was making both my measurements across the feed to the LED, and simply switched the multimeter from DC to AC. If I hadn't switched the range I wouldn't have got a different reading. My resistor carries a 5 band code. It is brown, brown, black, brown...
