Do I need masonry paint for a porch with an open doorway?

Thanks for that suggestion, though it appears to be a rather expensive option at £28 for 1 litre, versus £24 for 2.5 litres of Sandtex Masonry paint (B&Q prices).

Do I need masonry paint for a porch with an open doorway?

Our front porch is built with a single skin of bricks and has no door on the outside entrance. No rain ever hits the interior walls, which I now want to repaint. Using masonry paint such as Sandtex or Weathershield seemed the thing to do until I found that they only offer a very limited number...

Unreliable scene cycling using Hue button on dimmer switch

I realised today that my aging brain had been unconsciously assuming the system would know what scene was active and I was therefore expecting that a single press of the Hue button on the dimmer switch would always change to the next scene. However, it is now obvious that the system stores no...

Unreliable scene cycling using Hue button on dimmer switch

I have recently completed my first installation of Philips Hue smart lights. There are 6 x GU5.3 spots (all White Ambience) and 5 x GU10 spots (4 White Ambience, 1 Colour Ambience), all connected via a Hue Bridge. All lamps have been updated to the latest software version (currently 1.104.2)...

Can anyone identify the terminals on a Friedland 454 chime?

Ah, yes. The wonderful Leslie Phillips. These days, Miss Allcock would sue him for harassment...

Can anyone identify the terminals on a Friedland 454 chime?

I had actually stumbled across that link a while ago, but was not convinced that its guidance was reliable. Now that I have a proper understanding of exactly how these chimes work, it confirmed my feeling that the recommended wiring in the only detailed reply was incorrect. Under battery...

Can anyone identify the terminals on a Friedland 454 chime?

Many thanks for your useful drawing, which covered the optional battery connections I had not yet considered. Clarity has now emerged. A quick test has also now proved that I could connect a back door bell push across terminals 0 and 2 (getting a single ding on press and a dong on release).

Can anyone identify the terminals on a Friedland 454 chime?

I've only just realised that terminals 3 and 4 must be for the two ends of the solenoid. You can see the bare copper wires going from each of these terminals into the body of the solenoid housing. It's slightly difficult to see in the photo, but the mercury switch is connected between terminals...

Can anyone identify the terminals on a Friedland 454 chime?

I inherited the door chime shown in the attached photo from the previous owner of our house. It could be well over 30 years old, but still works perfectly and has the advantage of being louder than a modern electronic chime. It is marked Friedland No. 454 inside the outer cover (it's different...

Is it safe to run 12v DC LED from 8v AC bell transformer?

As a postscript to this discussion, future visitors might be interested to read how I modified the wiring for my new illuminated bell push for compatibility with a Grothe Mistral 600D wireless chime kit. I have just installed this to act as an extender for my existing Friedland chimes. The UK...

Is it safe to run 12v DC LED from 8v AC bell transformer?

In my post #69, I reported that the "DC voltage reduces to 12.8v when driving the LED". However, I have just realised that this measurement was taken at the output terminals of the bridge rectifier (when driving the LED). In my post #121, I mistakenly compared this to the voltage measured across...

Is it safe to run 12v DC LED from 8v AC bell transformer?

The input to the bridge rectifier, with the LED connected, is 15.8 v AC.

Is it safe to run 12v DC LED from 8v AC bell transformer?

It's 6.1v DC across the resistor, but I also measure 4.0v AC across this resistor.

Is it safe to run 12v DC LED from 8v AC bell transformer?

I don't quite understand that comment. I was making both my measurements across the feed to the LED, and simply switched the multimeter from DC to AC. If I hadn't switched the range I wouldn't have got a different reading. My resistor carries a 5 band code. It is brown, brown, black, brown...

Is it safe to run 12v DC LED from 8v AC bell transformer?

I am planning to try a higher value of series resistor to make the LED less bright and no doubt that will also extend the life of the LED, as you say. Have you any explanation for my latest DC and AC voltage measurements?

Is it safe to run 12v DC LED from 8v AC bell transformer?

I thought that you might like to hear how my project has been progressing over the past couple of days. An initial attempt to construct the circuit using a 6A terminal block I happened to have in my toolbox was not a success. The screws did not always pin down the narrow diameter component...

Is it safe to run 12v DC LED from 8v AC bell transformer?

These are interesting light sources, which I've not heard of before, but I'm not convinced that they provide a better bell push solution. This is partly because I have already purchased an engraved stainless steel plate with an illuminated pushbutton, but primarily because (to my eyes) it looks...

Is it safe to run 12v DC LED from 8v AC bell transformer?

I'm not a great supporter of referendums (in the world of politics, that is), so it was not really meant to be a serious suggestion. I also think that I've heard enough now on this topic to make a decision. Given that such regulators cost only pennies, I will probably get one for educational...

Is it safe to run 12v DC LED from 8v AC bell transformer?

There are two points of view being expressed about voltage regulators in this thread. It may be time to call a referendum. Those for 'taking back control' are obviously in favour, while those against are happy with the status quo (we could call them the 'remainers'). Where have I heard this...

Is it safe to run 12v DC LED from 8v AC bell transformer?

I checked out the 78L12 voltage regulator you mentioned earlier and can now see that it is a linear design.
