    Thanks for the reply. The PTFE tape was recommended and applied by the plumber behind me in the queue at the local plumbing supplies shop, although it is possible he was a hoaxster I guess. And thanks for the information but I struggle to see where else a washer would fit in the shower...

    Thanks for the reply. I don't think the original (working) installation had a rubber washer at that point, but what is the difference between a rubber and fibre washer for this purpose? I've never been able to find an explanation for that! And getting a fibre washer to even fit over the thread...
