UPDATE new info on possible re-wire of 1930's house

The only reason I posted again was because we'd found out some more info that might shed more light on the state of the electrics. Some people who'd replied to the first thread may not have been aware that we'd found out more. Apologies if I did the wrong thing, we just want to find out as much...

    Sockets on skirting boards

Right, we've been to look and here's what we found: Fuse box looks old and is brown in colour. Wires coming from the fusebox are flat, grey modern looking. It's been earthed. The builder that came to look at the loft reckons it's been re-wired at some point but not sure when. A bit has been...

Siting of a gas boiler flue?

Just to round off the saga of the flue. Firstly thanks for all those that helped out with advise. Secondly, the flue has now been re-sitied and is causing us no problems. It did cause a tiny bit of friction but it was worth it to be able to breath when we went out the front door!!

    Sockets on skirting boards

It is useful, thank you. Will check out as much as possible this evening. Although I don't think we'll be able to unscrew light fittings. But we will check the fuse board. Thanks again :)

    Sockets on skirting boards

Any idea of cost? Also if the house was re-wired throughout am I right in thinking that it's a big messy job and the house would need re-decorating afterwards to make good the mess to the walls? Any idea how long it takes?

    Sockets on skirting boards

Thanks everyone, The rest of the house is up to date, it's been looked after fantastically. We were hoping the wiring would be okay as we don't think we can afford a full re-wire as there is also a loft conversion to do. Sounds like it might well be a re-wire, any ideas on cost (3...

    Sockets on skirting boards

The sockets were light cream colour. The skirting boards are about 7'' tall. The sockets didn't look the type you'd buy today, but didn't look like they'd been there since 1930 either, probably more 70's (??)

    Sockets on skirting boards

Hi, We're looking at a house we want to buy. It has electric sockets on the skirting boards (1930's house). Would this definitely be a re-wire job? Or is it possible that it's fine as it is. The house was last bought 7 years ago so must have been okay then.

Siting of a gas boiler flue?

QUICK UPDATE: We phoned CORGI who say we can't complain about it to them, but the neighbour can. They did agree it wasn't in the right position and they are in breech of building regs, but they can't come and do anything unless the neighbour complains about the fitter themselves. We're a...

Siting of a gas boiler flue?

Thanks everyone! Having spoken to the neighbour and asked him to get back to his installer. Now we're waiting to hear what he's found out. We thought, to keep good neighbourly relations, that we'd give him till the weekend to do something about it. If nothing is done we'll tell him we're going...

Siting of a gas boiler flue?

Hi...again, Sorry to keep on, I've read here that the flue should terminate at least 600mm away from the boundary and 2.4 or 2.5 m from the boundary. Anyone have any links to something that I could show the neighbour? I've been looking for ages but can't find anything other than it shouldn't...

Can I lay new turf at this time of year?

Okay, so it might not be the ideal time. We don't want the turf to dry out if we lay it too near the summer, but we not in a desperate rush, although we would like the new turf to be laid by the summer time. So would it be better to wait till March or April perhaps?

Siting of a gas boiler flue?

The hole was drilled from the inside of his garage, it was only when the drill came through, we realised just how close it was to our window.

Siting of a gas boiler flue?

They did ask if they could drill a small hole for a small flue, they indicated it would be further away, and we assumed that we wouldn't notice any fumes or anything as we assumed a proffesional fitter was doing the job. The hole wasn't where we thought it would be and it was a good deal bigger...

Can I lay new turf at this time of year?

Hi, We've had building work done at the back of the house and the grass is now non existant in places, we also need to add new grass. Can we turf if we get a dry day? I don't want any new turf to dry out so I don't want to leave it too near to the warmer weather.

Siting of a gas boiler flue?

It might be mostly water vapour, but it smells horrible. We keep the porch door shut now to stop the fumes coming in, so now it's just 'steaming up' the glass! Fingers crossed for a solution soon. He has talked about putting an elbow on the flue to take the vapour up, but all this pipework...

Siting of a gas boiler flue?

Hi again, We want to remain on good terms with our neighbour, he is going to do some finding out, we suggested he get back to the fitter and implied we were blaming the fitter and not the neighbour. I've a feeling, however, that they might be friends with the fitter as some of the work was...
