    Boiler kettling

Tessaanddennis there are some psychic forces at work here because my boiler is kettling again and I thought I'd check my old posy out to review what advice I got 6 years ago - only to find that today you've added your question to it - spooky! The boiler is years old, it was in the house...

downstairs bathroom 25m from HW tank

Do you mean pump the HW round a loop and back to the cylinder? If so where would you connect the return loop to the cyclinder and also would the pump increase the water pressure at the shower, Im not sure it would. the other thing is would you leave the pump running 24/7? this seems a bit...

downstairs bathroom 25m from HW tank

I have a gravity fed HW tank and want to put a downstairs bathroom in my house with HW to a sink and a walk in shower. The only issue is that it will be 25m from the HW tank and with such a long pipe run, it will take an age for the HW to get through. I could put a power shower in - although...

    advice for solid oak floor

Joe-90, can you explain further, this would mean that a liquid DPM makes matters worse? No one has mentioned this up to now and if what you are saying is correct then surely the fitters should have checked this prior to laying the oak? thanks

    advice for solid oak floor

Insurance assessor been and gone and advises to take legal action against floor fitting company for poor work. floor fitting company have told me they are not liable as they laid the floor in good faith and argue they didn't detect and moisture issues before the oak was laid. Of course...

    advice for solid oak floor

Thanks Flooringman. They used a sika liquid dpc, single application, which they say they have used many times before without a problem. There was no smell of damp when the parquet was pulled up. I do now begin to wonder whether they should have removed the bitumen before using the sika? As...

    advice for solid oak floor

The logic, as explained to me, is as follows. Moisture was seeping through the screed and as the parquet blocks had a considerable number of joints, seeping through the joints. After the liquid dpc was laid, this moisture continued to seep through the screed but now hit the DPC where it...

    advice for solid oak floor

Had a damp expert in today. He says that a small amount of water vapour is rising through the concrete sub base and somehow getting through the DPC (assuming there is one). He says that its likely that this has been the case for some while but was probably evaporating through the cracks in the...

    advice for solid oak floor

Thanks guys, The board that we took up showed the following: Adhesive covered 90% or the board (which in my mind is probably OK) of that 90% I'd say only 10% had made contact with the concrete floor (this was apparent as the 10% had both DPM, bitumen and parts of screed attached to it). the...

    advice for solid oak floor

The expert arrived today and the findings are: moisture in wood between 10% and 11% the moisture content on the bottom of the boards are very slightly higher than the top - which I told is what you'd expect. expansion of around 15mm across 1400mm span (room is 3.6m wide) they took up some...

    advice for solid oak floor

Thanks WoodYouLike, the fitters returned and after testing with damp meters and finding no damp anywhere, they've decided to engage a specialist to seek out what has gone wrong. They're due to turn up in a few weeks time (which is a pain). I suggested that they had hadn't used enough glue as...

    advice for solid oak floor

Hi, I've recently had a solid oak floor laid to my living room (4m x 7m). The oak was glued to level concrete after a parquet floor was lifted (which was stuck down with bitumen). A liquid DPM was applied before the new floor was laid. The oak floor is 20mm thick 140mm wide and various...

    dimming 12v halogens

i've installed 6 12v 25w halogen downlighters in my study, each of them with their own transformer. They all work perfectly well when using a normal switch. I decided to replace the switch with a dimmer and again all fine. the only problem is when I dim them to the lowest setting on the...

    Boiler kettling

The safest solution so far appears to be to take the HE out of the boiler and fill with DS3. However, I think thats a bit beyond my skills! I've tested the Boiler thermostat - all is OK. whats the worse thing that can happen with DS40? (anything major that does happen will be punished by...

    Boiler kettling

So, it sounds like DS40 is the Daddy of descalers? I spoke to a mate of mine who said that if I'd used X200, DS3 wouldn't do much good. He said DS40 would do the job. I must say I'm still a bit apprehensive....... I'll post my results. Cheers
