Hi,
I have a small flat roof that is really in need of a full re-do but we cant afford to do it at the moment.
I have stripped off some of the old rotting fascia/cladding. I will be replacing it in the coming weeks.
We have recently added insulation to the flat roof ceiling space (between...
Hi all,
We had the plumbing re-done in our property about 4 months ago. Turns out the plumber wasn't going to win any awards. Nice bloke though.
Anyway, discovered a leak from the hidden cistern. He hadn't connected the inlet properly and it slow dripped down the side of the cistern and on to...
Hi all. Two question. Many thanks for your help in advance. See attached photos.
1.
I have scoured the building regulations (scotland) and cannot find anything saying that a hearth must be raised (in relation to surrounding floor). Yes it must be distinct etc but does it have to be raised...
Hi,
I know old fireplace/hearth questions are talked about on here a lot but i don't think this question has been answered, or if it has, not comprehensively.
I have taken out the concrete hearth of an old disused fireplace, in preparation to re-lay the original t&g flooring throughout the...
This question has been asked and answered in many different forms on this forum but i think the specifics of this example are a little different.
1930's house
slate roof
non-breathable felt membrane
sarking boards
No roof vents, no ridge vent and no vents at soffit/eaves.
Really really bad...
Am I totally wrong in thinking that if i mount an infrared heater on the ceiling of a kitchen that has a concrete floor, it will warm up the floor and make it feel like underfloor heating?
Or would it warm up your head when standing under it but not really warm the floor?
Ceiling height is...
Hi.
I want to take down/change some internal walls. Single leaf brick construction. The walls do not support the roof joists - it happens to be a bungalow if that makes any difference (attic is semi boarded). I want to prove to building standards (Scotland) that the walls are not structural...
Hi,
I am planning on doing some drawings for building regs purposes. Some of the foundations of the house are visible as we have removed floor boards and had a dig around. Without digging right down, it's hard to make an accurate drawing. Any tips for this?
And......how would an architect or...
Hi All,
I am renovating a 1930's bungalow.
It previously had night storage heaters on an economy 7 system. These have been removed.
I was certain that having mains gas plumbed in was the only way to go - combi boiler etc.
However, a plumber i use has made me aware that electric heater...
Hi All.
I know what you are going to say, go and get the opinion of a professional struct eng.
But this is a DIY forum so let's forget about the professionals for a moment.
Trying to determine is the wall shaded yellow is structural?
Some background.
Bungalow, no second floor, so the...
Hi,
This is a small flat roof that joins to the house and main pitched roof.
Some background info:
It has never had any insulation between rafters and doesn't have insulation on top.
Timber roof joists/rafters with timber furring. Then plywood and then torch on felt.
We discovered the...
Hi,
I have lifted the 1930's pine floorboards from my house. I plan to insulate underneath them and then re-lay and sand.
Should I:
1. Glue and nail them down
2. Just nail them down
3. Screw and glue
4. Just screw
Worried about squeeky floor boards.
Any advice would be great. Thanks.
Hi,
Anyone have any idea what it is likely to cost to have a licensed gas supplier fit a new gas meter to a house? I am having mains gas supplied to the house via SGN.
SGN will not install the meter themselves and say that a licensed gas supplier should be used. British Gas etc i'm assuming...
I want to install double glazing to my single glazed timber sash and case windows.
I realize that is possible to do this by simply adding a new sash with a double glazed unit, however my question is:
Is it possible to install double glazed units of glass in between the existing muntins?
My...
