    afternoon! ok, so I had a go and have disconnected the pipe configuration from the pump as you suggested. the F&E tank is clean as a whistle and I popped some water into it when i let it run nothing came out!! Have also discovered a gate valve half-way up the cold feed. So i disconnected it...

    Checked the 2vertical pipes. Magnet does not sticking all the way up

    Yes I do have an upstairs. No water coming for the rads up here. I think a lot of water had left the system today. Are you suggesting just bleed an individual rad?

    Ok so I have used my magnet. Not sticking to the feed pipe as far as I can tell. But. It is sticking to the pipe directly above, and leaving, the pump. Also sticks to the horizontal pipe leading to the air release valve

    Hi terryplumb, i have drained a few litres from the system. The water level in the F&E tank has not moved. :( I dread to think what this means.

    thanks John. Yep the pump arrow is pointing upwards. Been in place for about two years and not been a problem. I have never been sure what the correct speed should be, so thanks for your advice. I will ensure it is as you suggest.

    Yes. Boiler reacts same way HW or CH. So, by drain the system you mean the entire CH system? May have to do that in the morning.
