    Loft insulation

I need to reinsulate my loft ahead of next autumn. The current insulation is not deep enough to current standards. Can I lay directly over the existing insulation to make up the extra depth or are there certain materials that shouldn't be laid next to each other.

    Radiator not working

If you mean a valve with numbers 1-6 on it, then yes. It is currently on number 6. The valve does turn so does not appear stuck. Do you mean the internal workings are stuck ?

    Bathroom Electrics

Part P ???? I don't even know about Parts A to O !!!! FYI I am not going to be doing the work myself, I will be getting an electrician in to do it for me. Does that solve the problem ? Is it notifiable because it is in the bathroom ?

    Radiator not working

The radiator in my utility room stopped being hot a few days ago. I tried bleeding it but no air came out, just water straight away. The valve is set to the highest setting and no one has turned it off. All other radiators are working fine. Any ideas.

    Bathroom Electrics

A couple of queries........... I am redecorating my bathroom shortly and part of the work consists of replacing the existing light above the mirror and installing a heating pad to the back of the mirror which also requires an electrical question. Ideally the heating pad should only work when...

    Stairwell Painting

See where you are coming from but I need to paint up against the coving and around a small window frame as well. I could do around the window from a ladder but not along the length of the coving.

    Stairwell Painting

I will be shortly painting my hall/stairway/landing. Given the height of the wall in the stairwell I am intending to do it in two lifts over two weekends as on the second weekend I'll need a platform on the stairs to get to the top. Question is, will there be a noticable join halfway up the wall...

    condensation in wooden double glazing

This has just happened to one of the panels on our bedroom window and one of the ones in the en-suite. A coincidence or related problem ? Does the occurrence of condensation mean that the thermal insulation properties of the unit have been lost. Also, should the entire unit (including wooden...

    Confused

:P :P :P namsag Think I am with you know kevplumb. I assume that when I am not using the trigger on the hose the pressure on the open cold tap is forcing mains water up into the hw tank which in turn refills the loft tank. Correct ? Where would the check valve need to go. Some where...

    Confused

Not sure I understand what you mean. I initially thought that it may be that the demand on the tank meant that the tank was filling up quicker than it was emptying due to water pressure and pipe sizes but I think the utility room sink is fed direct off the mains so the demand on the tank would...

    Confused

With the hosepipe ban over I decided to save a few quid and wash the car at home yesterday. I ran the hose from the mixer tap in the utility room with hot and cold on full. A while after using the hose, water started trickling from the coldwater tank overflow pipe sticking out under the eaves...

    Laminate Flooring

I am currently laying a new laminate floor (real wood with oak veneer, made by Westco, bought in Homebase) which looks quite nice. Only thing is, it is proving far harder to lay than I think it should. It is a glueless system and the tongue and groove is really tight and I have to whack the...

    Removal of gas hob

I have just dealt with the reverse of this. My old cooker had a halogen hob and electric oven and I wanted a gas hob. Under the kitchen units was a small stub coming off the gas pipe between the boiler and the fireplace, with some sort of cap on it. The fitter just removed the cap and connected...

Plumbing novice help needed bathroom sink

If the only problem is the length of time it takes waste to drain away then you don't have to turn off your water, etc. First of all, I would take apart the u-bend as cleaning that out may solve the problem straight away. If it is blocked further away then it may get more difficult as you...

    leaking overflow pipe

If you repair your ballcock then the overflow pipe shouldn't be a problem should it, i.e. it won't overflow. Or are you talking about the overflow pipe from the bath itself ?

    Dripping Overflow Pipe

Update on this. I ventured into the loft yesterday evening to have a look and the existing ball valve assembly was so corroded that it snapped off as soon as I touched it ! Cue panic as water starts entering the already full tank (do overflow pipes carry more water than is coming in. Don't...
