Laying a patio - is mortar a must?

Most of you have probably thought - what a knobhead! However, a couple of years ago I did pave a small area in front of my shed with 2x2 concrete slabs laying them just on a bed of sand. I only needed 6 slabs but they are still level and steady, and there aren't even any weeds growing between...

    Decking over a concrete path

Is this feasible at all? Since the path is quite raised above the ground level I intend to bolt the sleepers to the sides of it rather then on top of the concrete while leaving a small gap between the concrete and the decking for drainage. The path is about one and a half foot wide.

    Connecting a built-in electric oven

A daft question probably.. I'm replacing my old gas oven with a built-in electric one. It's 2.2 kW. The cooker socket I've inherited from the previous house owner is 45A, a weird shaped one. It also has a safety switch above the worktop which I was going to keep. The new oven has a 13A...

Grunfos pump problem - help please

Would be really grateful for an advice. I had (still have) a small leak in my central heating pipe (small enough to be able to cope with it by changing a cloth on the floor underneath every day). I know, it should've been fixed long ago. Anyway, we were going on holidays for a fortnight so...

    Filling gaps in privet hedge

Hi, I cut my privet hedge well back (1 ft approx), as it was invading my garden. It's now looking rather bare but the new buds are starting to appear so I'm not worried much. The trimming also exposed a rather ugly, half rotten 50 cm tall slatted fence that was buried in the depth of the...

    Decorative concrete

Hi, I'm thinking to build a patio in my garden and also to re-pave the exsisting solid concrete footpath (a rather ugly one) using decorative concrete. I want them to look something like this: http://www.concretethinker.com/Content/ImageLib/dfw3.jpg (Well probably not exactly the same...

    To hide copper pipes

Hi, In my bedroom there are 4 central heating 8mm copper pipes that are currently nailed on top of the skirting board. I'm changing the skirting and trying to think of a better idea to lay them. Basically, I can think of 2 ways to do this (see images). Option 1. Is it safe to go like...

    To paint concrete slabs

Hi, I'd like to paint concrete slabs brownish-yellow sort of colour. Could anyone advise a type/brand of paint to use and any tips on the process? Any ideas most appreciated, Alex

    Ceiling plasterboards

What type of screws to use to fit plasterboards to horizontal beams in order to lower the ceiling? Never done this before. Boards are 9.5 mm, and the beams are 75 mm thick. Don't want it to fall on somebody's head  With regards, Alex
