Hessian-backed carpet without underlay or grippers?

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to lay hessian-backed carpets without underlay or grippers (like you would lay felt-baked carpet), just on bare floorboards? Could the carpet still look professional or would it look awful? (I'm booking a professional fitter). The aim is to have a carpet that...

    Faulty circuit?

Assumptions, assumptions... And an unfair accusation. What do you think I am doing right now? I have only just started with this project (stripped wallpaper, that's about it), and believe it or not, Electrics have come up as the next thing I am dealing with. And here we are. (no, I haven't been...

    Faulty circuit?

Sorry. You were probably right, industryspark... I just didn't like the idea of disarming myself even more, this silly screwdriver being the only thing I have to do at least one basic thing with dreaded Electrics !!

    Faulty circuit?

Tell me about it! For a country that has enough means to buy up the property of most countries and go to war in as many, you'd think they would have the means to put safety first and invest in a high standard of build at home. The bare covering up of faults (rather than repairing/fixing them)...

    Faulty circuit?

dingbat: Because there weren't any 'basic' problems before I started stripping the place. All the lamps / sockets were working. The present problem must have happened along the way. It either has to do with the old cables in the wall, the disconnected lights, or a short circuit / overload that...

    Faulty circuit?

when I removed the lights of course I checked what was connected to what. I could reconnect lamps correctly any time - just don't see a point to reconnect those old dusty smelly things until I've got the new lamps.) why would removing lights cause other lights (and various sockets) to not work...

    Faulty circuit?

 1948! the rubber in the top cable is indeed degrading, flaking off very easily just from touching it!

    Faulty circuit?

I am having an electrical problem in a flat I am doing up. (don't know much about electrics, so the cause might be trivial!) A few days ago, a circuit breaker tripped (probably because of overloading -- I was using a steam stripper at the time!). I switched the breaker back on and...

Joiner or Double Glazing Company or Wickes?

Richard C - Thanks for the invaluable information. Still struggling to get all of that in written quotes. It really is a cowboy industry. They expect you to pay a deposit upfront, don't provide any written agreements, are extremely cagey about detailing any work to be done in written. hmmmm...

Joiner or Double Glazing Company or Wickes?

All that admin and building control sound like a real pain indeed! But thanks for the cautious note, I'll call my local council tomorrow morning first thing. One of the DG companies also lauded the Rehau windows, which is apparently what they use. Can you recommend that?

Joiner or Double Glazing Company or Wickes?

Hello everyone, I am looking to replace all windows (6 of them), one balcony door and a front door of a flat I am doing up. Looking for all uPVC double-glazing (maybe wooden main door). Cost is an important factor (as is a job well done). I've had some trade quotes from various...

    Good place/shop to buy decoration materials? B&Q = :-(

Thanks to everyone for the much appreciated input! I see more clearly now... I'd been buying the cheaper ranges (B&Q's own and some other cheap ones), and as always, I guess, you get what you pay for...

    Good place/shop to buy decoration materials? B&Q = :-(

Hello everyone, as my name suggests, I am a decoration newbie (deco-newbie, but busy as a bee) and have recently gotten more and more depressed by the low quality of materials available at B&Q. Any suggestions as to fabulous shops / places where you can buy amazing materials at good prices...
