Just checked and yes, the upstairs toilet is supplied by the cold water tank so that explains it, thanks for the reply.

Is it possible to fit an isolation valve to a toilet cistern inlet pipe without having to turn the mains supply off ? Our stopcock is under the hall floorboards (a real pain to get to) and a plumber last year fitted a valve to the upstairs toilet and I'm sure he can't have turned the water...
