    Concrete door canopy replacement

Thank you, I've had a look at canopies on the Internet and some of them do look a bit odd without posts, like something's missing. Am hoping the builder will know what he's doing - am not sure what an outer leaf is, is it the external layer of bricks?

    Concrete door canopy replacement

Hi. I have an ex-council house with one of those little porch type structures comprised of concrete posts and a 'cover'. The posts are loose and the whole thing is, to be honest, ugly. I can't afford a full porch but want some sort of protection from the elements that looks good but not too...

Wall is too hard to drill

Thanks! Our friend who's an electrician came round to install a light fitting and in 20 seconds managed to drill the holes with that sort of drill - he says I can borrow it whenever but it's one for my Xmas list!

Wall is too hard to drill

Thank you, I have used a detector to check for pipes and wires etc. Just bought a better bit so will have another go later. Fingers crossed!

Wall is too hard to drill

Hi. Am trying to put a knife rack on the wall but cannot drill deeper than 1cm as the wall is rock hard. I'm using an old one speed 450W drill with a regular masonry bit. I don't do enough diy to justify buying a new drill so would another bit be more suitable? Also I'm a bit confused about...

    Upstairs lights tripping problem

We will try tomoz, if we don't reset the upstairs light fuse everything else stays on so can cope with that for now. Thanks very much, I hate electrics :)

    Upstairs lights tripping problem

Hi, we unscrewed a light switch to paint round it and now all the electric in the house is going off when we switch power back on for the upstairs lights. What could have gone wrong please?

    Toilet whistling and constantly running

Thank you, am determined to do it myself. Water is constantly running into the bowl as well as whistling, it's driving us mad.

    Toilet whistling and constantly running

It hasn't broken into song yet but give it time! It's doing this all the time and I've found that if I lift the float slightly it stops but don't know how to maintain the float at this higher lever. It's an internal overflow one. I'm a complete amateur by the way! Thank you

    Fixing hooks to hollow door

Hi. I'd like to attach a couple of hooks to a hollow bedroom door and understand I can't use regular plugs etc. Could someone tell me what to buy, preferably named products - nothing too heavy will be hung from the hooks and the door is a pine one with panels. Thank you.

    Buying a new gas cooker

Thank you for the enthusiasm. The new cooker arrived today, yay. Kitchen cupboards are 1cm too low so it didn't make it out of the box, boo. Why doesn't the retailer, who is never knowingly undersold, point out these regulations when you buy the flipping thing. I don't want to open another...

    Farrow and Ball modern emulsion

Just to let you know that the painting went really well, the F+B was great to work with and looks fantastic. I'd defo use it again. The only drawback was that I had to order it on the Internet (not from the F+B site, too expensive) but got free P&P.

    Buying a new gas cooker

Thank you. I had a look at the fitting yesterday but wasn't sure what sort it was. It looks as though the kitchen fitter might have sealed it with something as well?

    Buying a new gas cooker

Hi I'm about to buy a cooker. The old one is 60cm and fits nicely into the space but I've heard that there needs to be a gap either side now. This would mean getting a 55cm one which would look silly. I know nothing about connecting one so would have to pay for this on delivery. Does anyone...

Thank you for the comments, there are enough positives there for me to try it! I'm hoping to do the painting next week so fingers crossed .

    Farrow and Ball modern emulsion

Thank you. I usually use Dulux or Crown but once branched out into Benetton emulsion with disastrous results as it was so thin, which is why I'm wary of trying a new make.

    Farrow and Ball modern emulsion

Hi. I've never used F&B before but they have just the colour I'm looking for. Before I splash out can anyone tell me what it's like to work with please. Thank you!

    Dumb question about cable clips

Hi. I need to move the Sky dish cable to make room for a conservatory. What type of clips do I need and how do I attach them to the outside wall -are they hammered in or are they like regular screws? Told you it was dumb
