yep, it switches over when the fan runs. so if I power the fan (separately so it runs) and turn on the boiler then i get to a different fault. i don't get any ignition, and eventually the error code is 'no flame detected'. I can hear a few relays (there are several close together) clicking...

sorry to crash in but I have a bit of a related question relevant to this thread - what about sealed systems (e.g. combi boilers). can you rely on the system to push the air around enough and bleed it off at the radiators or the pump ?

Have you checked this with the gas tap to your boiler closed off? Not just with it off ? This would rule out a leak in the boiler (unlikely I know) You might have some cast iron piping, which was used before copper. Cast iron is very slightly porous, which could explain what is going on...
