need advice - changing bay window to french doors

Can anyone advise??? We have a 1930s semi and at the back of the house is a bay window (5 yr old UPVC) with a small pitched slate "roof" ontop. The window projects 350mm from the back wall and has small side windows. We really want to open this room up into the garden, and I'd like to get...

I got a noisy chimney - PLEASE HELP!!!

I have an average 1930s semi. When it is even just slightly breezy, there is a repetative tapping / pinging sound in the chimney breast (upstairs). It is definitely not dripping water - sounds almost like a metal ruler twanging against brickwork and picks up pace in line with the wind...

pitch pine doors - yellow tinge - need help with staining...

I've bought some stripped 1930s internal doors which are (i think) pitch pine. They've been pretty well chemically stripped but they have that common yellowish tinge which I ideally want to get to a mid oak colour. I've tried various waxes, stains and varnishes but they are either too thin...

upvc trim and nitromors staining - need help

Can someone identify this technique / style?

Can anyone tell me how this stippled effect is achieved and what the correct description is? I like it and want to repair it where I can, rather than skim the whole lot. It's got character, as the wife says?! http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff1/deelaminate/stairwayplastering.jpg...

Last year I bought a 1930s semi, sensitively decorated throughout with Woodchip, Artex and Lead. Can anyone tell me WHY???!!!   (not having a good day stripping two layers of woodchip)

really stuck with this! Scribing skirts at funny angles.

Hi, Does anyone have an explanation of how I can scribe skirting 1" x 7" Ogee into my bay window? The angle is 30 degrees off the internal wall (mitred) - so 120 off the external (front wall) - if that makes sense. With the profile of the Ogee, it's not possible to scribe surely...

Does it really "need" replacing? - loose plaster!

Hi, any advice would be really appreciated - We have a 1930s semi and in places the render/plaster sounds hollow when tapped. In most rooms so far I have removed (very easily) all render and made a good new job. One area we've missed is the hallway. I reckon 50% is loose and should by...
