HI, I left hte taps open for about an hour, then a loud noise and brown dirt blasted throught the pipes and then it was clear, what was that????

HI, I live in a block of flats. This morning i went for a shower and discovered there was no cold water coming out of the shower. The sink, nor the toilet have hot water either, both are 'upstream' of the shower (I think). I have no idea what could have caused this isolated loss...
