    Buying a new oil boiler

Thanks to all who replied so helpfully. Worcester and Grant seem to be most favoured - plenty of strong feelings on the subject, tho. One guy I had out said he fitted Warmflow and preferred them as they could be wall mounted, but I now nothing about them. Will research. Thanks again for...

    Buying a new oil boiler

Hi, We need a new boiler and one of the heating engineers I have had round to give an estimate recommends a Grant Vortex pro 26 for our house, to be kept in the garage, floor mounted. I haven't read anything bad about them, but he isn't keen on me buying it off the internet (!) and would...

    Oil Boiler

Last posted early Jan - engineer on 4th visit repositioned photocell, boiler worked fine till today. Locked out again. In despair. Contacted manufacturers but they only said v. unlikely both pump and cell go at the same time (my engineer replaced both on separate occasions). Get the feeling...

    Oil Boiler

Ta. Will change. Probably been 3 amp since it was put in in 1999 by heating firm. Great :o

    Oil Boiler

Yes he removed the burner, yes he put a pressure guage on it. No I don't know whether he has set the combustion correctly. If it is still covered in carbon we will soon find out as it will stop again and next time he comes round I will ask him point blank if he has checked the burner head...

    Oil Boiler

Update: same engineer came yesterday, moved the cuff that holds the photocell in place (as he worked out boiler would fire up, burn for 6 secs, then cut out) - apparently indicating failure of photocell to pick up flame? Anyway, he did this and it worked for 8 hours. Later on, noticed that...

    Oil Boiler

Thanks to all who have posted suggestions. Going off line for a lie down and a cold compress on the forehead, plus large alcoholic drink - in my freezing house. Ta. N

Bad batch? Worth mentioning or not? N

    Oil Boiler

What is a Delavan A, and does it mean that their readings are not reliable because they are using an unreliable device? N

    Oil Boiler

OK. Will find new Oftec reg. engineers and just tell them what's been happening so far. See what they come up with. N

    Oil Boiler

Oh hello Nixt Polite people nicer to deal with but not necessarily more intelligent! You are probably right. I wondered whether Thermecon had a bit of a reputation. The heating engineer only said that they imported all the boiler parts from other countries and then assembled them here, but...

    Oil Boiler

Thanks to both Oilman and Whatdoiknow (more than me, obviously!) Your suggestions have been VERY helpful. Will contact our (Oftec registered, amazingly!) heating engineers and suggest they look at replacing the burner. I take your point about cost, and will check this with them too...

    Oil Boiler

Ow! Still, cheaper than new boiler. Wonder why engineer didn't even think of burner? Model is Landis and Gyr LOA 24. Mean anything to you? Regards, Nico

    Oil Boiler

Dear Oilman Thanks for your measured reply: no I don't treat everyone the way I treated Nixt, but he was very rude - I'm a 55 year old teacher who knows zero about boilers - I'm no fool in my own area, but I do kind of rely on the engineers in the heating area. I am getting the info you...

    Oil Boiler

It's a Thermecon W50/801. Have been on their website but do not see it. It is 65 btu. This is all the info I could find on it. All I can repeat it, it did exactly this: repeated lockouts after many engineer visits 4 years ago, when it was 4 years old. Tiger loop replaced once - it was...

    Oil Boiler

Thanks Nixt, you're a great help. The POINT of using posts is to try to get extra advice. The POINT of calling in heating engineers is to try to get the problem sorted. I teach. If my engineer needed a teacher, I'd expect him to call me. If I need my boiler fixed, I expect to call an...

    Oil Boiler

This country bumpkin is also relatively new to oil: used to live in town and we had PROPER gas! Well, I know I got it filled before it got to the sludge stage. Dunno how I can ask the suppliers if they got air or water in when they filled it (they'll say no, not us!) However, tank was...

    Oil Boiler

Dear Tony, That's it - the photocell is what was replaced today. No, I didn't think the window looked dirty, tho' the engineer thought it did (he is now getting desperate after 3 visits!) OK. Exact description. It does light at ignition - engineer thought flame detection failure was...
