drainage - getting rid of slabs

Is there a danger of causing damage to foundations if i get rid of paving flags round the house and put grass in? At the moment the water flows away from the house over 3m distance from the wall. The whole floor area is paved. If i only leave 1m of paving round the house will the different...

    chimney breast removal

not heard a thing. And roof is all fine and dry. Based on my personal experience i would advice anyone with chimney stack problems to get rid. A little bit expensive to do (500 quid) but worth it in long run imho.

    no seals on cutout

thanks RF. I hope the guy does not mind sorting the copper out. I doubt i'd find a spark that would just come to cut 1cm of copper off a tail. Also it would mean two visits by the DNO, one to pull the fuse for the repair and the second to actually change the meter.

    no seals on cutout

i have a similar problem to yours. My house was rewired nearly a year ago and the spark just pulled the fuse. Unfortunately he has not done a good job of wiring the tails into the meter as the blue (neutral) tail has 1cm of copper exposed. There is no isolator between meter and CU. Can the DNO...

With a lot of trade contributing to these boards I was wondering if anyone had any advice in terms of what insurer to pick for buildings and contents insurance. I'm after an insurer which has a reputable network of repairers, not necessarily the cheapest. Any ideas/experiences? thnks

    uk border police

was watching this new series on sky1 "uk border police". Basically if an illegal immigrant is arrested and has not got a passport, he has to be given leave to stay and therefore avoids deportation. Sounds to me like even if the will was there, they won't be able to send these people back. It...

    Tarmac drive

Hello, I have a tarmac drive and I'd like to make it look better without having to lift it. I am considering artificial turf but not sure how to install it, would I need a base like sand etc etc. Also are there any "edging" bricks that would look decent on a tarmac drive as a boundary to...

    Root problem?

Hi, As you can see from the pic the neighbour has a tree which is less than 3m from our walls. A few branches are growing on our side (again see pics). Should I worry about the roots causing any further damage? I've read in places that sometimes it is better to leave this trees in...

    meter installation

hello, i am considering having a water meter installed. the outside stoptap is shared with the neighbour. There would be about 30 to 40cm of pipe in the kitchen after the internal stop tap. Would this space be enough for the water people to install a meter? I have no clue as to the size...

    Return of the cold war.

no major cities would be left but countryside would survive largly unaffected by the bomb blasts. It would obviously suffer the fallout. I would assune that scotland would have some safe heavens even though every bugger would be going there in the first place thinking the same. Spme refugees...

    Return of the cold war.

watching a nuclear movie called threads gave me the creeps. I hope those two nutcases calm down or we will have to live through "threads" for real. I'd rather die in a direct hit than run to a nuclear bunker. Surely these would be useless in the aftermath of a full scale nuclear attack...

if mains severed by a jcb..

thanks. in your experience as an electrician do you find that contractors are generally honest in owning up to mistakes such as cutting through cables? Also do you know what distance are cables buried below footpath level?

if mains severed by a jcb..

so if cable is not completely severed and power is still on but earthing is compromised and the trench is covered up by cowboy contractors who may not even notice the problem you could have a supply which is dangerous without anyone knowing? Does this happen often?
