    No planning permission for fence

I was informed by the contractor that the fence I was having erected would not require planning permission. However, I have subsequently found out that I should have sought planning permission as the fence is adjacent to a highway. I have a feeling that one of our neighbours is going to complain...

    Asbestos garage roof?

The house I recently bought has a garage with a corrugated concrete sheet roof. The question is whether the roof is likely to have asbestos in it. I know the garage was built in 1995 and wondered if asbestos had stopped being used by then?

Noisy Ferroli boiler when ch is on

I have recently had a new Ferroli Sigma 60/100 boiler installed. The problem is that when the ch is on the boiler makes a chugging noise that vibrates through the house. It is fine when just the h/w is on but as soon as the ch turns on the noise starts. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    TRV question

The radiators in my new house have trv's on them. These valves have white caps on the top of the control knobs. However one has this cap missing and is showing 4 small holes in the top. What are the caps for? Do I need to source a replacement for the missing cap?

Hot water in cold water storage tank

My guess is that it is the vent. I drained down the cold water storage tank and turned off the mains feed to it to see if it would backfill from the cylinder. It didn't, so I don't think the coil is damaged in the cylinder. The vent pipe is warm only for an inch or two from the connection with...

Hot water in cold water storage tank

There is no imersion heater. The hot water cylinder is controled via a cylinder stat set to 60 degrees and appears to be working fine. The hot water flow from the top of the cylinder goes horizontal for a couple of feet before going vertcally down. The vent pipe is connected to the horizontal...

Hot water in cold water storage tank

That was the first thing I checked. The cold water feed is definately connected correctly at the bottom of the tank and vent from the top. The cold water shower feed has been taken from the correct tank. I am sure the heat is coming up the cold water feed as the pipe gets quite hot.

Hot water in cold water storage tank

My cold water storage tank feeds the hot water cylinder and also a shower with a pump. On several occassions the shower has been too hot to use. My initial reaction was that the shower was faulty but decided to do a bit of diy investigating and discovered that the cold water storage tank...

    Telephone master socket wiring

My golden retriever thought it would be fun to pull on the telephone wire on the outside of the house. The consequence being that she pulled the wire out of the master socket. There appears to be 4 wires - orange, black, green, and white. There are 3 screw-down terminals labelled A, B, and E...

    Noisy Ferroli Sigma Boiler

I have just had a new Ferroli Sigma boiler installed. The problem is that it is incredibly noisy. The noise can vary and sounds like either someone using a lawnmower outside or a washing machine on the spin cycle. The noise vibrates throughout the house. The engineer says it sounds ok to him...

    Balancing Hot water/radiators

My heating system has a manual balancing valve on the flow to the hot water cylinder which is only just open, hence the water takes a long time to heat and only gets to approx 55 degrees C (the radiators heat up fine). The engineer said it needs to be set that way to ensure there is sufficient...
