Why do 3 port valves need a neutral wire to the actuator? I understand why an earth is used, as with the honeywell v40437, as it has a metal lid, but why a neutral? just curious!

Because electricity has to travel in a circuit!

Without a neutral the motor wouldn't be able to turn and the valve wouldn't work!

The motor needs the neutral to complete the circuit that makes it turn.

Without a neutral nothing will move.
