We have recently moved to a new house and are discovering for the first time the joys of oil-fired central heating.
The main house was built in 1976, so is cavity wall but almost certainly has no cavity wall insulation. We plan to get that insulated at some point using polystyrene beads.
There is a large recent (10 year) extension to the property. Looking at the drawings it was specified with a 75mm cavity with 25mm insulation in the cavity (some sort of solid foam board). I know the cavity isn't completely filled as a bird got down there the other day and made a lot of noise as it came to grief .....
The question is - is it possible to have cavity wall insulation blown in to the gap that is in there (c. 50mm if the wall has been built to spec), and if so, is it a sensible thing to do?
The house is detached and relatively exposed, so one of the benefits of having a gap in the cvavity is reduced risk of moisture transmission, so would we be giving away more than we gain if we added further insulation?
Have recently upgraded the loft insulation to 270mm and the house is pretty draught-free.
