Can a 'normal' shower tray be made into an adjustable one by using some thick ply for support and adjustable feet as used on kitchen units?

Or is there any particular reason why a tray can not be packed up on some timber sections?

Regarding shower wastes, I've seen some 'vortex' and no-clog wastes - are these any good - do they perform as advertised?

Shower trays are usually set level using a weak mortar mix to support them. That's what gives them most of their strength and rigidity. It's necesary even if you build your own plinth, so carefully levelling the base before installation may save you about half a shovel of sand.

Cut or pack your timbers to 'close enough' and the bedding takes care of ther rest.

Just make sure it's all as rigid as you can make it. Any movement in use disturbs the sealant between the tray and tiling, leading to leaks.

In my experience, waste traps don't get clogged if there is access to clear them - only pipework without any maintenance access is prone to blockages - but that's just sodds law.

Set out the bearers for your plinth so there's a 'hand hole' between them you can use to get at the waste if you need to.
