I am looking to make my heating/hot water more energy efficient.

current system is a Worcester 35CDI combi and my Gas supply is LPG (flogas).

I want to save money on my bills and be eco friendly at the same time.

I also have log burners around the house and i am quite happy to harvest the heat from these to boost the heating system.

Budget is £4-5k

What sort of system would you recommend? My mind is open to anything

Your boiler is already about 80% efficient.

Replacing it will save about 12% on gas bills but the real carbon footprint of the manufacturing and installation cost will be very high.

If you have so much money to burn you could have solar panels fitted to reduce water heating gas consumption but they will not give you more than about 5% saving on the installation cost. There is no payback period.

If you get free logs you could see if you can find a water heating log burner.

With my last fill of LPG it was over £620 it was only filled up 25th of Jan and again last week to get the new bill. So i want to bring ongoing cost down rather than keep paying them prices and all the LPG prices are going to do is keep going up.

Solar was one thought if it can be added to my current system.

I do get some free logs and lots of pallets that i chop up too, i wouldn't want to have to keep the log burner going 24/7 to have heat really i don't mind it assisting the heating though.

I have a baby coming in Sept and i want a warm house over the winter for my wife and child, we only have the heating on 5.30am - 8am and 4.30pm to 9.30pm and it still uses lots of gas.

My roof seems well insulated but it is a circa 1880 house so the walls are stone with no insulation in them, they are however 2.5ft thick.

Thanks for your advice Tony. I look forward to more for others too.

It is a case of little improvements all adding up. The loft needs about a foot of insulation and be air tight as well. Is the hatch sealed?

Are the windows sealed? The door sealed? Then solar panels. To use the panels and the log burner you will need a thermal store. The gas boiler, solar, log burner and electric (backup for CH & DHW) can all heat it.

Loft hatch is a old wooden one, roof seems well insulated but i will get this investigated as it is a huge void as all the ceilings in my house are lowered (i suspect to make it easier to heat:)).

What is a heat store how big etc? I like the idea of using all the options BigBurner how can i go about it?

Look at this. This is just one way. The gravity part is a solid fuel boiler.

this web site can be daunting as there is so much info in it.

A drain down direct solar heat bank. Solid fuel can be incorporated easily to these.

Many other companies do heat bank thermal stores that can do multi heat sources.

I have never dealt with this company and expect them not to be so cheap. They have a very informative web site. Other companies will do them to spec, adapting an existing model.

Well it is a case of knowing what you need and approaching different cylinder companies for quotes.
