Hello

Some time soon(ish) I'm gonna build a pergola in the garden. It's gonna be quite big and I'm thinking of building it out of green oak or chunky pine.

I've done a bit of research on designs etc. I was gonna concrete the uprights into the ground for stability. In most the photo's I've seen the uprights sit on some kinda plinth. But I can't understand how they anchor to the plinths to give stability!

If anyone can advise I'd much appreciate it

Thanks in advance ... Mick

To be honest that type of construction I've seen doesn't have any fixing between plint and timbers, it's held there simply by gravity and friction. Seems to work too there are many medieavel buildings simply just sitting there.
However, if you are intent on some kind of fixing use a stainless dowel or allthread resined into a hole in both the timber and the plint. Do a dry run first and make sure everythings right before resining. If you bore the hole into the timber the lenght of the dowel and half the lenght into the plint apply resin and dowel and gravity will do the rest, or alternatily resin the dowel to the plint first and fit your timbers one at a time.
