Any ideas what this cold water tank is made from?

Planning on removing this.

It's an old cold water tank located above a bathroom in an Edinburgh tenement, in the UK.

Is it going to be safe to break up? And, any recommendations on how to minimise damage in doing so? Suspect I might need new lining paper or the walls skimmed once it's out - they look in some state.

Any help / advice much appreciated!

Cant really tell by the pics, but that could be asbestos, you would be best getting it tested

Water tanks often galvanised steel , or glass fibre in older properties .
Edge looks rough like unfinished glass fibre .

Thanks guys. Ordered a asbestos kit just to be on the safe side. I think this bad boy is a good 100 years old - still had no lid on it.

What you have there is an old lead lined storage cistern.
i agree with Jim if it's that old. A wooden box with lead lininng. If it is lead it has value so a visit to your local scrappie might be a pleasant surprise. It'll be heavy so you'll probably have to cut it up to make it managable.
