indeed not. Investments can go down as well as up as well as up and down, whether they're houses or anything else. And you don't have to contribute to a high-charging scheme with big commissions if you don't want to.

But if you're investing into a pension scheme for 40 years, you can expect some parts of it to do badly, and some to do well, and maybe some amazingly well.

Plus of course you have the taxman giving back the 20% or 40% tax you pay to add to your fund, so it can turn out a very advantageous way of providing for your old age.
