Believe it or not, after market sensors actually pick up on the metallic paint, used to finish them...... and pack in after a year or so.
If the Audi ones are a factory fit and haven't been 'bodyshopped' (i.e reinstalled upside down  ) more than likely its the control module at fault.
If the noise you hear is the same as the 'STOP BEFORE YOU HIT THE BLOODY WALL' sound though, it could be an individual sensor.

The Audi sensors are quite well known for going wrong. As Burnerman says if you get the continous beep like you are about to hit something then it is usually a sensor.

Take it to a VAG specialist (not a main dealer) they will be able to perform a scan of the system and tell you which one is faulty. There is information on the internet that says you can determine which sensor is faulty by putting your ear next to them, if it doesn't buzz its faulty. There are two problems with this, firstly it involves you crouching down behind a car with it in reverse gear - not very safe. Secondly the sensors don't always short and stop working completely - they have to osciliate to a particluar frequency, this sometimes slips and although the sensor hasn't completely given up it doesn't read right.

Last point is when you have identified the faulty sensor buy a new one from Ebay, they are about £25 on there, £61 from the main dealer.

thanks i waters does anyone know how to find out the model number without removing the sensor first thanks

The aftermarket sensors I fitted to my 406 scream their heads off at a blade of grass but will quite happily let you reverse into a wall - or a car

Let me know the year of manufacter and the engine code which is a three letter code found on the white sticker in the spare wheel well and I will get the part number out of the parts catalogue.

iirc, the faulty sensor will tick(when you touch it)

again iirc any of the vag sensors should fit.

i had these on my ford galaxy tdi,vw engine.

you might also consider getting your own fault reading lead from ebay, then download the free basic software from the ross tech site, this will allow you to read a lot of your own codes.

I know this is a old post-- but for future reference-- one of the sensors has gone duff. ! fails and it knows all sensors out-- even if a back one fails the front ones are knocked out also. I know - ive done 2 on my audi A6.
Best cheapest/way to test them is use a mechanics stethoscope- only a couple of quid off ebay.
Ignition on- car in reverse and go around sensors listening for a clicking noise. The sensor which does NOT click is the duff one .
Also be aware - inner sensors are different from outer ones . (different shape.
I get my new sensors from German Ebay. Half the price they are in UK.
£33 I think for last one 12 months ago--including delivery.
