The Pegler Automatic Bypass Valve has a dial going from 0 (fully off) to 5 (fully on). What does it mean to have it set to 0 and then set it to 5, when it's connected to the usual flow and return pipes of a Combi boiler.

It lets water through when the pressure, marked in Metres ( or 0.1 bar) head, is across the valve. A htg engr will work out what to set it at for your boiler/system.

I'm not trying to set it, I'm trying to understand what its been set at and why?

Anybody know how they should work?

its set to give a minimum flow rate through the boiler to stop it overheating
Not EXACTLY...
OK - it's splitting hairs. But ABVs are designed to open quickly and fully, at a set pressure, rather than progressively.

The setting should be a little bit higher than the pressure when there's still enough flow (ie TRVs open) to keep the boiler happy.
