Hi -

I've got pumped hot water in my CH system. At the outlet end of the HW coil thru the cylinder there's a cheap cannonball-type valve which I doubt functions anymore. Am I right in thinking this was intended purely to isolate the pipework and not for any balancing purpose?? Am I right in assuming, unlike radiators, the HW flow is not balanced - the higher the better??

Thanks.

It almost certainly IS for balancing purposes, and the cylinder coil should be balanced. It wont be so crucial on a small system, but if you have a lot of rads, the low resistance of the cylinder coil can potentially steal a lot of the flow and lead to everything else on the system being slow to warm up.
