bath waste outlet

I am fitting a new waste outlet to a cast iron bath.
The original waste overflow was embedded in what I assume was plumbers mate or some kind of putty which fell apart when taking it out.
( it was there for some 30 years)
Do I embed the new outlet in plumbers mate or silicon and do I need to fit rubber or plastic washers.

`Twas putty- use same agin, it`s cheap.or if you have silicone handy, use that- plastic/rubber washers on outside (underneath)
