I recently had an annual service on my boiler - prior to this it was working fine. After the service the pilot light would not light. Another engineer cleaned it and it worked ok for 4 days. Today the boiler seems to be overheating - after 30 mins a click is heard and the pilot light is extinghuised which can only be relit after the overheat reset button is pressed. The engineer today has told me that this is nothing to do with service but because there is sludge in my system which needs to be power flushed. My boiler is still only working for 30 mins at a time. Can anyone advise if this solution they are telling me is correct as seems a bit of a coincidence that since serviced now not working properly?

Faults can be 'just coincidence' unfortunately.

Has the pump been checked, or more importantly the pump over run is working properly?

This is controlled by the boiler.

Dont know if pump was checked but I don't think so. I've read that a power flush is used to remeday cold spots on radiators etc but all my radiators are fine/hot and the hot water is fine.

When the boiler and rads are up to temp, turn off the heating and HW at the programmer. The pump should continue running for 6 minutes after the boiler has gone off.

It could be the overheat stat tripping out at a lower temp than it should - have you checked any temps?

Yes after turning off HW and heating pump is still running. Have tried adjusting boiler temp today and the engineer did but doing this at all different temps

Im guessing he has disturbed the 'contacts' on the o/heat stat when removing the burner.

I was caught out on this when I started servicing these boilers on my own.

I would suggest cleaning the contacts and see how that goes.
