BBQ area / tiling / work surfaces?

I have a double brick built BBQ that uses charcoal, i would like to tile the outside surfaces (so no direct heat).

1st question - will normal kitchen type tiles and adhesive be ok, if not, what would be better?

I would also like to build a work surface nearby, with storage space under.

2nd question - which material would be best for an outdoor work surface, that is not expensive?
