Last year I decided to spruce up the outside of my downstairs lounge bay window. It was last painted in gloss white about 6 years ago and was flaking a fair amount.

I did some research and decided Ronseal exterior paint seemed like a good idea especially as it it had a 7 year guarantee against cracking. I bought a tin of Ronseal white gloss topcoat and their primer which is recommended to be used with the topcoat.

After sanding down all loose and flaking paint down to bare wood, I applied the primer waited a few hours and applied the top coat. The top coat was rather gloppy and thick to apply. It was difficult to get a smooth finish, but I persisted reassured by Ronseals 7 year guarantee.

Imagine my surprise this year, just over 12 months later and all my hard work was for nothing. The paint has cracked and flaked off worse than ever. Ronseals guarantee appears to be nonsense and I dont think I made any errors in applying the paint.

The window is north facing and shaded so not subjected to strong sunlight.

IM now considering repainting but would like to know a good brand to use that actually lasts a few years.

Al info welcome

If you ever go down to bare wood again, use Sikkens base coat and top coat stains if you want glorious colour with the grain of the wood showing through. No cracking, peeling or anything that gloss suffers with.

Sikkens is so specialist (it appears) that your average DIY store doesn't stock them, but independant or large ICI decorating shops stock them.

Using water based paints will always cause you problems outside. I am a firm believer in using oil based products outside. The waterbased paint cannot cope with the expansion and contraction of the wood and will split and flake off. There are several paint systems that can be used, Sikkens is one and Dulux also have their Weathershield range which is very good.

Cheers guys, looks like I need to try the Sikkens or Dulux systems instead. Mind you, with the time of year I will probably have to wait until next spring time.

Absolutley, wrong time of year now.

International Exterior Gloss Paint 10 Year guarantee is the best I have ever used
