Hi guys.

I keep getting the smell of the neighbours cooking in my back bedroom. Today it was really bad burnt toast that stunk the room out.

The room is in the process of being renovated so the floorboards are up. There are naturally gaps between the joists and the brickwork, im guessing that is where the smell is coming in.

What would be the best way to seal between the joist and the brickwork as per the attached picture?

Im guessing what little mortar i could get in that tiny gap wouldnt take to the wood and would crumble out over time.

Thanks

Will the silicone take to the wood and the brick?

Didnt want to go expanding foam in case it leaks through the neighbours side.

If you use foam, it will be under their floor anyway, so they won't know unless they have their floorboards up.
Yes silicon will take to the wood/brick. (y)

Foam doesn't expand that much!
However, it's too rigid for this purpose. You need a flexible mastic
