Black screws

i am looking for black screws that will not rust they must be suitable for an exterior wooden gate, the screws are to hold the latch and catch, no longer that 30mm, where is the best place to buy these, and what is the proper name for the screws?

Black Japanned Wood Screws, they are normally used in wrought iron.
Wickes do them but any good ironmonger or even timber yard.

They are called japanned as this is a method of coating the screw, the screw may not be rust proof but this coating will prevent the onset of it.
If this coating has been damaged it is likely to rust.
Can't vouch for the quality of the ebay stuff.

Agreed. I'm yet to find a black japanned screw that doesn't, and trying to fit them without damaging the coating is virtually impossible!

I now use stainless screws and touch in the heads with satin black Weathershield.

I normally paint them too with black metalic paint after being fitted.

I used a pack of a dozen No 8 X 1" black japanned round head screws from Homebase.
As usual, I thought the price on their little packs of screws was some kind of a wind-up, but the fastener specialists are the other side of town, and closed at the weekend.

After fitting, I touched up the damaged coating with a dab of Hammerite (I hesitate to call it paint, but it does a good job).

Quick tip - use a discarded piece of electrical flex as a small 'disposable' paintbrush. Strip the end, dip the copper wires in the paint, snip the end off afterwards - no cleaning a paintbrush after 5 seconds worth of painting.

Also rope. I have a length of 5mm polyprop I keep in the garage just for this. Snip a bit off - instant paintbrush.
