I had the bra-wire-stuck-in-the-drum thing, and removed the wire; the grating noise stopped, but the now machine growls whatever programme i try. Drum moves freely when i spin it by hand, as does the 'fan' in the filter. Any suggestions what i should try next?

It sounds like a problem with either the drum bearings or the motor. To check which it is, take the belt off. You can then spin the drum by hand and see if it makes the noise. If it does not make the noise you can then check the motor by running it on a spin programme with the belt off. It could be down to worn motor brushes or motor bearings. On the other hand, the extra friction of having the bra wire stuck may have overloaded the motor, giving rise to shorted coils and lots of sparks.
