hi thank you all for the replys so far.
the rsj i wish to box in is supporting a chimney breast in the loft, the rsj is 50mm below the ceiling in the bedroom the only way i can box this in is against the wall and upto the ceiling, i have read elsewere there is a sequence ie. box rsj first then board ceiling then wall if this is true i will have to pull the finished ceiling down , would it make any difference boarding upto the ceiling with 12.5 plasterboard plus skim. also if i had to take the ceiling down what would i have to do with the top of the rsj in the loft.

cheers

If the beam is in the floor/cieling void, then you don't have to box it in - the plasterboard celing provides the fire protection

thanks for reply
are you saying it's ok to board upto the ceiling and not in the sequence i mentioned.
