British Gas UP2 Controller and Thermostat

Hello there,
We have recently moved into a new property which has a Valliant unit providing hot water and the central heating. The Valliant is controlled by a UP2 unit which has linked to it a thermostat.
I want to be able to operate the Valliant from the thermostat only. At the moment if I put the UP2 controler on "ON" it seens like the boiler ignores totally the thermostat. Also on any of the other controller settings the thermostat seems to be ignored.
What do I do?!

What sort of unit is this mystery Vaillant? Combi or heat only?
Stat may not be wired correctly. Ignoring the stat, does the boiler respond to settings on timed operation?

thank you for your reply. It is a combi one. And it does seem to work fine on timed mode.
