Hi all

40 trees, all around 20ft above ground level (they are up a slope)

Bunchabracken'&'gorse spread over the slope.

To prune and/or cut down the trees, and to uproot the bracken and gorse.

Take the whole lot away and burn/imolate it.

4 guys for 7 days = £3,500. One guy has quoted £1,200...

Thoughts?

£3500 is 125 quid a day for each bloke (probably more for the boss and less for the boys) - not exactly a luxury wage, when you think about it.....

No - indeed.

It was more whether you thought it sound like 28 man-days of effort?

Not sure what you mean by that. But yes, 3 and a half K sounds like a lot when you could buy a chainsaw and do it yourself!

Cue all the HSE comments on chainsaws.........

Clearing large areas of bracken and gorse is difficult. The machinery needed to do it properly is pretty serious stuff and therefore had a premium attached. You have to factor these large overheads into a quote like this its not simply the time taken.

A team doing it with 10 grand of kit could possible do it in 3/4 days

Whereas a couple of guys doing it with a brushcutter might take 2 weeks.

This type of job is a good example of one where you just need to get quotes and take the best one as trying to work out someone elses costs is pointless.

Want my take?

Learn how to use a chainsaw and get the right clothing... now....chop down the frickin trees, into kindle sized bundles... sell at car boots, end off your drive etc..

Buy about 150 bottles of beer = approx £100.... get 15 of your biggest/fittest mates around ... give them scythes, rakes, knives, etc... let 'em loose... buy £50 worth of fireworks and 10 lanterns,,,, burn all the green stuff... let off fireworks, release the lanterns for the kids, drink the beer, and get pizzas.....

cost = £300
revenue on cut timber £2000......

simples !!! ;)

Cheers Mr Martian and others.

As it happens, we got two other quotes; one said "loads of weedkiller, and we'll pour petrol down it and set it on fire". Unsurprisingly, he wasn't top of our list.
The other quoted £1,200 to do all I listed earlier and to remove all of the waste. TBH, I wouldn't be surprised if the job ended up costing more but £1,200 heading for £2k seems better than starting at £3.5k.

Will keep you posted!
