ceiling plasterboard ripped for wiring -how to pull back...

....pulled off all the dodgy varnished T&G from my kitchen ceiling to find that the two kitchen light fittings have been wired up from a central point via a channel ripped through the plasterboard alongside a joist. problem is that one side of the plasterboard is fixed nicely to the joist (which than has ring main and lighting wiores attached to it, BUT...the other side is sagging as it's nearest fixing is 18" away at the next joist.

the channel is only barely wide enough to push a cable through, so don't really want to hack more away, but has anyone any ideas as to how I can bring the two sides level?

run along with expanding foam to fill the gap, scrape back when it sets and fill with a filler and sand.
