Changing a shower

Can anyone help please, I'm a total novice & have read all the other posts, but want some advice as I'm being quoted rewiring as the solution @ £500?

I have a Mira Sport 8.5kw that I want to replace with a Mira Azora 9.8kw, the house is 12 years old & there is an RCD(it has 80 A stamped on the front of the trip switch in the fuse box?).

I'm not sure on the cable size (the grey cable attached to the inside if the shower measures approx15 mm) or how to find out what the fuse size is(it has B 40 stamped on the front of the RCD protected shower switch in the fuse box).
1) Could this just be swapped?
2) How do I find the Cable size?
3) How do I find the Fuse size?

THe cable should probably have its size stamped on it. Yours sounds like 6mm too me, to small!!


You'll need a sparky, the work is notafiable

You do need a new, bigger, cable to run that shower but he would not need to rewire anything else.

He may need to update the earth bonding conductors as they may be too small.

He may need to up grade the RCD shower unit.

IMO £500 is way too much for that.

Does that include the cost of the replacement shower???

A quick google for that shower shows that it's £250 ish so a further £250 to replace the shower CU, rewire the circuit and replace the shower doesn't sound too bad

No that doesnt include the cost of the shower I have already got that!

I'll definitely be getting a sparky in to sort it, I just wanted a heads up from someone who's got experience/expertise for this kind of job.

If the cable to the shower is exposed anywhere then have a look and see if you can see any markings on it. Often (although not always) the csa is stamped on the sheath.

Have a look here for help on working out the csa using the outer sheath dimensions.

Perhaps, but a B40 will pass 42.6A indefinitely. As I am proving with my Mira Escape 9.8kw, which passes a Hager B40 and a Wylex B40 (I know i should change one at least)

Because I created a kind of submain off which im running a fan and shower, both controlled via a 4 pole contactor and 10A pullswitch by the shower cubicle. So in the enclosure I have a 100A mainswitch, 40A for shower, 6A for control and fan, and the contactor. Its all supplied by the original shower circuit, 10mm² on a 40A.
