Changing fire on baxi Bermuda 401

If he doesn't use the fire then its perfectly fine to stay in its place allowing the back boiler to operate as normal.

It may well be something repairable such as some lint stuck in the burner restricting gas flow to the fire, may be worth having your service engineer take a look when he can. Even if the fire is beyond repair, it can be made safe but left in situ for the back boiler to work.

Could be as simple as the gas meter governor is iffy, blocked jets.
He does realise that heating by electric will be at least 3x more expensive than the gas fire (and with the tariffs coming) could be considerably more.
Hope he's got a correctly fitted (and in date) carbon monoxide alarm.

Get an experienced engineer, thes things are pretty bomb proof, not many things on them that cant be sorted
