If you use say a standard wire brush, not really advised? you will scratch the surrounding masonry [I have assumed masonry, not brick work]
There is a product on the market that is sold as a paviour joint cleaner, it is a triangular shaped bronze wired thing that removes the dirt and also has a drawback of scratching the masonry edges nearest the mortar with the resultant difference in colour?
Suggest you have a look at "Soda Blasting" that would clean both the lime Mortar and the Masonry, this form of cleaning is a soft way of removing the build up of years of dirt and grime on an external wall. Following on from this method a re-point with a suitable Lime based mortar will revitalise the entire wall?
